Similac Alimentum Reviews 2017: Does it Really Work?

Product Name: Similac Expert Care Alimentum Hypoallergenic Infant Formula with Iron, Powder, 12.1 Ounces (Pack of 6)

There is nothing more important than the health of your baby. How you feed your newborn can have a huge impact on their growth and development.

Breast milk may be the best food for your newborn, but unfortunately, that is not an option for many mothers. When I was a baby, my mother eventually had to put me on formula because there weren’t enough nutrients in her breast milk.

When it comes to formulas, there are many different varieties, and your baby may like one and not like another. But what can you do if infant formula is making your baby sick?

Does Your Baby Need Hypoallergenic Infant Formula

Some babies have extreme allergic reactions to cow’s milk and cannot take regular infant formula. This is why some companies have created hypoallergenic infant formulas.

Remember that there are a lot of reasons why babies don’t react well to certain formulas. If your baby is having a hard time with a particular one, you may want to simply switch to a different brand.

Hypoallergenic formulas do cost more than standard infant formulas, so I recommend you consult with a pediatrician before you make any purchase decisions.

There are certain telltale signs that your child may be suffering from an allergic reaction. Below are some questions to consider.

  • Does your son suffer from constant acid reflux?
  • Is there mucus in your daughter’s poo?
  • Is your child suffering from constant diarrhea?
  • Are you struggling to keep his eczema under control?
  • Does your daughter appear to be colic?

While these can indicate a food allergy, symptoms such as diarrhea and eczema can have a variety of causes. It may be wise to consult with your pediatrician first in case the issue isn’t protein sensitivity.

Similac Alimentum Review

Similac was developed in the 1920s by Abbot Laboratories, and was one of the first infant formulas ever created. They have since developed variations on their formula suitable for children with special dietary needs.

Similac Alimentum is a hypoallergenic infant formula. It is intended for infants who struggle to digest the dairy and soy present in most formulas.

Brief Overview

For babies with suffering from protein sensitivity, there is a lot to recommend in Similac Alimentum.

  • Proteins in this formula are broken down into simpler forms to make it easier for babies with digestive issues.
  • Alimentum works quickly, reducing or eliminating digestive problems in as little as 24 hours.
  • Enriched with iron and other essentials for your baby’s development.
  • For babies with sensitive tummies or allergies, this formula can make them happier and healthier.

There are quite a few things to recommend about Similac Alimentum. However, it does have a few drawbacks as well.

  • This formula is very expensive, and can cost over two dollars an ounce.
  • Due to the nature of the formula, it has an unpleasant smell.
  • The formula will perish in extreme hot or cold, which can be a problem if you live in a very hot or cold climate.
  • The key feature of this formula that makes it different from others is the deconstructed protein used to make it.

Who Is This Product For?

Although it is perfectly safe and nutritious for almost any infant, Alimentum was specially designed in a lab for babies who have an allergy to cow’s milk.
As I mentioned earlier, there are a variety of symptoms for this allergy, but the bottom line is the same. Although this allergy affects a relatively small number of infants, it is not an insignificant percentage.

Although it is developed by advanced science, the formula actually works quite simply. By breaking down dairy proteins into more basic forms, babies are able to digest the protein and get the nutrients they need without experiencing an allergic reaction.

Alimentum is very effective, but unfortunately, it is also very expensive. This is due in part to the specific way it has to be created in a lab.

What many mothers do not know is that their health insurance does cover Similac Alimentum. You will need an official prescription from your pediatrician for this to work, however.

The Verdict

Alimentum is an excellent alternative to traditional infant formulas, but its prohibitive cost is a problem.

My advice: don’t buy it unless your baby needs it.

Real Similac Alimentum Reviews

When it comes to something as important as your baby’s health, you need to be informed. To help you in your research, I have gathered some excerpts from Similac Alimentum reviews from real users.

I have included both positive and critical reviews. Some of the reviews have been excerpted, but you can find the original reviews on

I have sorted them by the rating the original reviewers provided.

My daughter had bad eczema due to cow’s milk allergy, but this formula cleared it up and saved me a lot of worrying!! But now I worry if I will be able to buy it some days because of the price!! Very expensive, but I sacrifice so she can get it.

Five-Star Review

So we just started this formula for our 4-week-old baby boy after trying the regular and then the sensitive. With the other formulas, we were still having a lot of spit up/vomiting, but the worst part was how uncomfortable and upset he was right after he ate. While he still spits up, he doesn't cry after eating like he used to. He actually gets that happy milk drunk look that babies are supposed to get.I already feel punished by the fact that I can't breastfeed him, but the cost of this formula for such a small can adds insult to the injury. Plus, I have never received any coupons that I have seen other people get to help with the formula, which would at least take away some of the sting since we are a [single] income family of five now.

Four-Star Review

I had originally planned to solely breastfeeding, but due to a tongue tie and resulting muscle tone issues, I have been pumping and bottle feeding while we undergo therapy. Due to this issue, my milk supply is low, and quite a struggle to produce and pump enough milk to keep her satisfied. Because of that, we ended up having to supplement with formula. We first tried Earth's Best Organic formula, which I wanted to work, as I loved the ingredients that were used. However, it was apparent after a few short days that something was wrong. We ended up switching to Alimentum. The problem improved, but did not go away. Today, at 8 weeks old, she ends up drinking only about 4-6 ounces of formula to supplement the breast milk. Her symptoms are much improved, but not gone. One of my complaints is the smell. This formula smells awful and I hate having to feed my child something that smells so much like a combination of cleaning chemicals and curdled milk.I also am not happy about the corn in the ingredients (35% Corn Maltodextrin) as my baby (like many others) seems to have a sensitivity to corn as well.In short, this is a great relief from regular formula, however, I'm still not totally satisfied, and wish there was another option out there.

Three-Star Review

This is not the answer to eczema. My baby has severe eczema. We have tried soy-based and now this hydrolyzed formula. No improvement in eczema whatsoever. Only some allergic reactions are caused by cow milk protein, so don't listen to your doc when he says switching formula is one thing you have to do.And this formula is so expensive! But it does nothing...

Two-Star Review

This formula costs more than my entire family's grocery budget each month! If we could do a cheaper formula, we would in a heartbeat, but this is all my little guy can tolerate. Please rethink this repackaging decision. Despite the outrageous costs, I was always a big fan of Similac. This change, however, has me very disappointed in the company. The only choice we have is to give our son less formula and more milk or try another brand again.

One-Star Review

An Alternative Formula

Due to the difficulty in making hypoallergenic infant formula, there are very few options for mothers. However, Enfamil also makes a hypoallergenic formula called Nutramigen.

Like Alimentun, Nutramigen breaks down the difficult proteins that some babies struggle to digest. Unlike Alimentum, Nutramigen is also designed to help lactose-sensitive infants to develop a tolerance for cow’s milk.

Alimentum has been proven to reduce allergic reactions in as little as 24 hours. Nutramigen does not work as quickly, and it takes at least 48 hours to find results.

Both Alimentum and Nutramigen use corn as their main ingredient, either through maltodextrin (Alimentum) or corn syrup solids (Nutramigen).

However, Nutramigen uses a higher percentage of corn-based ingredients (45%) than Alimentum does (35%). In general, the ingredients used in Alimentum make for a better formula than the ingredients found in Nutramigen.

Complete nutritional information for both formulas can be found on their respective websites.

Both formulas are similarly priced, but Enfamil’s formula tends to be slightly less expensive than Similac.

Both formulas are effective and can help babies with lactose sensitivities. Remember, some babies’ react differently to different formulas, so one is not necessarily better than the other.

Because they are based on different formulas, a baby who has difficulty with Alimentum may do better with Nutramigen, or vice versa. It is always good to have options.

Helpful Tips

I have mentioned costs before, but I haven’t included any specific prices. This is partially because prices will vary from store to store.

Alimentum can usually be found at Walmart and Target, and it may be available in other supermarkets as well.

You can also buy Alimentum on Amazon. You have to purchase it in a pack of six, but you do save some money per ounce.

However, by subscribing to regular deliveries on Amazon, you can save some money every month, which can make a difference.

If you choose to have the formula delivered, you can expect it to ship in three to five business days. All shipping is free, but Amazon Prime members are eligible for two-day or less shipping at no extra cost.

This product is also very expensive. Depending on how much your child eats.
